- ZoneAlarm (free) or Sygate Personal Firewall (free)
Personal firewall software blocks incoming attacks. It also stops malicious code installed on your system from communicating across the network and revealing your secrets.
- Mozilla
Mozilla, my browser of choice. It has tabbed browsing (try it!) and a built-in pop-up killer. Keep Internet Explorer around for those sites with ASP scripting that won't run on anything but IE, but this browser offers more convenience and better security. Plus, it feels faster.
- AVG Free Edition or AntiVir
You should run an antivirus tool, but most folks don't want to pay for one. Tired of Norton Antivirus and paying for lifetime updates? Fortunately, there is free antivirus software that's updated regularly.
- Spybot -- Search & Destroy and Ad-aware
Since spyware constantly changes and evolves, you have to download updates for your spyware removal tools. I run not one, but two spyware removers in the hope that between the two, I'll catch ant bad stuff on my system. Sometimes one finds something the other doesn't.
- OpenOffice.org
Don't buy Microsoft Office or steal it. Download OpenOffice instead. Word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool - FREE!
- AbiWord
A free word processing application that works with Windows, Linux, QNX, FreeBSD and even Solaris. Perfect for those who can't live without Microsoft Word, but wish they could, offers compatibility with OpenOffice documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, and more.
- IZArc
Alternative to WinZip. It has an easy-to-use interface that looks like Windows Explorer, and it can also handle .rar and .iso files (WinZip can't).

Yes, Windows XP has a built-in ZIP exploder. Sure, WinZip or WinRAR might be the best choice for zipping files. Stuffit Expander is still a free way to open any archived file. It can unpack just about anything.

Foxit Reader is small and quick. It doesn't need any installation, so you can start to run it as soon as you've downloaded it.
