Summer’s Here!

Summer is almost here, and Saskatchewan Diving is hitting the road! Every summer we send coaches out on the road to teach safe diving to kids all over the province and now is the time to book your clinic!

This year we have made some changes and additions to our program. While we are still available to do some 1 and 2 day clinics, our priority is to help you set up a 6-8 week program with classes held once or twice a week.

We will help you start out with a weekend Coaching clinic to teach your lifeguards how to conduct our Learn to Dive classes. We will provide you with resources such as student booklets, badges, stickers, posters and report cards and will visit you at least once during the summer to give you a hand. At the end of the summer we will help you host a Mini Fun Meet. We will provide you with funding grants through our Rural Initiative program and our Membership Assistance Program to help you cover your costs and pay your lifeguards.

We can also send one of our coaches out once a week to coach your class if your pool is fairly close to Regina or Saskatoon.

There simply isn’t an easier way to get the kids in your pool excited about diving and excited about coming to your pool.

Learn to Dive

Since 1976, Diving Canada and its Provincial Sections have been promoting the Learn to Dive program in municipal pools and Diving Clubs throughout the country. The initial goal of the program was to introduce children and adults to the skills of diving as a sport and educate them in a correct and safe manner. So far, thousands of children and adults have been able to discover diving through the Learn to Dive program. This program has skills that follow a logical progression to ensure that all participants can complete all levels if they wish. The teaching methods include games and fun activities to provide a positive atmosphere for participants. A cornerstone of the program is the promotion of diving safety; knowledge that will carry over for a lifetime!

Going from the Known to the Unknown

remains the philosophical theme of the Learn to Dive program. Consequently, each skill described I the instructor manual has a multitude of progressions or “building blocks” for each dive level. The skills and progression of each dive level have been organized so that the student diver can complete all four levels of the program if they wish.

Who Can Teach the Learn to Dive Program?

Any Diving Enthusiast! Your provincial diving office, Saskatchewan Diving, is available to assist anyone who is interested in becoming qualified to instruct the Learn to Dive course. We will provide you with all the materials you need to promote and administer your own Learn to Dive program. Anyone can use the information found in the Instructor manual to teach diving safely and effectively in his/her respective community. The Instructor Manual is an excellent introduction to the sport of diving –it includes the most fundamental skills and techniques that will help your instructor teach the program in your facility. Each skill goes through a careful analysis including: previously learned skills, progression, important points to remember, common faults and possible solution. Therefore, the program is designed to provide an instructor who has a very limited background in diving with as much useful information as possible.

Benefits of the Learn to Dive Program…

For the Participants:

An important aspect of the revised program is to minimize the risk of failure and reward all participants for their efforts in a positive manner. All participants receive a waterproof booklet within which they can chart their own progressions through a bronze, silver and gold stage of each of the four levels. Bronze, Silver and Gold stickers are provided and should be affixed on the appropriate certificate (one for each level) in the booklet after the student diver successfully completes each stage of a level. The program includes games and fun activities that teach safety and skill development.

For Diving Instructors:

Instructors who complete the Learn to Dive Instructor course will be recognized under the National Coaching Certification Program as a “Pre Level One” qualified coach. This represents the first stage of the coaching ladder and ensure that LTD Instructors are rewarded for their experience. An easy and effective administrative package is available to help instructors organize and administer their own LTD program.
