Skills Canada Saskatchewan, a non-profit association, was started five years ago and has held competitions in Prince Albert, Regina, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. Hosts for the competitions were SIAST, high schools and businesses in the area.

The mission is “to promote skilled trades and technologies as a first choice option for youth in Saskatchewan.” To accomplish this requires partnership with the world of work, education and the community as a whole. This year Skills Canada Saskatchewan will be supported by industry, community, and government through the Saskatchewan Labour Force Development Board.

Skills Canada relies on volunteer work through the Technical Committees, Judges, Host institutes, high schools and businesses, instructors, teachers, sponsors and promoters.

National Competitions are held every year and are a showcase for the highly skilled from each province. It is a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to meet and share expertise and new skills. The practical challenges are designed to test the skills required in each competition area. Successful candidates from the national contest are then selected to represent Canada at the World Skills Competitions held bi-annually. This year, Canada’s 9th competition will be held May 29-June 1st in Waterloo, Ontario. The 37th World Skills Competition will be held in Switzerland on June 22, 2003
